The world has experienced a great deal of history, leaving a mark on the cultures, buildings, and landscapes across every continent. Recognizing this, the global tourism industry now caters to history-conscious travelers through ‘historical tourism’: vacations specifically built around the past and how it has shaped the world today.
Whether you have a specific historical interest, or you’re simply looking to immerse yourself in a new and unfamiliar culture, several destinations might appeal to you. Here are eight of the best historical vacation destinations that every history buff should add to their bucket list.
1. Rome, Italy
Few parts of the world can match Rome’s sheer density of significant historical structures. It has the Roman Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, St Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, and the Sistine Chapel (with its incredible ceiling). There are more top-tier historical sights here than anywhere else in the world! As a history buff, it’s one of my favorite destinations to visit.

2. Athens, Greece
Athens is arguably the birthplace of Western thought and civilization. In fact, many of the concepts and institutions we now take for granted can trace their origins to this place. Here, you can visit historical sites like the Acropolis and the Parthenon (both iconic structures). And if you want to walk in the footsteps of Socrates and other scholars, you’ll need to visit the Agora.

3. Luxor, Egypt
South of the Mediterranean lies Egypt, which is home to several of the most impressive structures of the ancient world. The Pyramids of Giza are synonymous with the country and its culture, but the Karnak Temple and the Valley of Kings, further along the Nile, are arguably more impressive. Plus, there’s a remarkable Egyptian museum that recently opened, offering an unparalleled look at ancient Egyptian life. Definitely worth a visit!

4. Pompeii, Italy
Pompeii holds a unique appeal among the world’s historical tourist destinations since it’s very well preserved, following the eruption of nearby Vesuvius in 79 AD. The entire city was buried and the ruins cover nearly 440,000 square meters! You can take a short tour around the theatres and houses to learn about what life was like in Pompeii before the eruption. It’s simply fascinating!

5. Angkor Wat, Cambodia
This Hindu-Buddhist ‘city of temples’ was established in the 12th century. Today, it’s one of the top historical vacation destinations in the world, with more than two million visitors descending on the site each year. And it’s easy to see why! The sprawling temples are regarded as the largest religious structures on the planet.

6. Great Wall of China
The world’s most famous wall was initially constructed to repel would-be invaders. It was completed over several centuries by successive Chinese dynasties and now spans more than thirteen thousand miles. It was largely constructed by soldiers and convicts, many of whom died while working and are now buried within the wall itself. The most interesting sections, and the ones that appeal most to tourists, were constructed by the Ming dynasty.

7. Machu Picchu, Peru
The citadel of Machu Picchu was built atop a Peruvian mountain by the Incas in the 16th century and remained undiscovered by Europeans until the 19th. Thus, it’s earned the title ‘Lost City of the Incas’. For those who want to earn their views, you can hike to it from the Inca Trail, which typically takes 4-8 days (depending on your pace). Or, for a more leisurely experience, you can take a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo. Easy peasy!

8. Taj Mahal, India
Arguably India’s most famous structure, the Taj Mahal was built in Agra by the Mughal Emperor Sha Jahan, to commemorate his late wife. It’s a masterpiece of architecture and a must-visit for escorted tours of India. The structure took over 22 years to build on the backs of over 22,000 laborers. But, their work wasn’t in vain! The ivory-white marble mausoleum stands today as a testament to true love and is sure to impress romantics and history buffs alike.

And there you have it! Eight of the most remarkable historical vacation destinations in the world. Visiting these sites is a great way to immerse yourself in history you might otherwise only read about in books. And those lasting impressions will stay with you for a lifetime.
