An absolutely stunning destination in Ireland (and one of my favorite places in the world) is Killarney.  Its ancient ruins, lush forests, jaw-dropping gardens, and lakefront vistas are like something out of a storybook.

But, with so many picture perfect places to explore, where should you start?

Here are six of the best things to see in Killarney that are sure to inspire a visit to this fairytale town.

Muckross Abbey

A highlight of not just Killarney but Ireland itself is Muckross Abbey.  Founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary, the abbey has a long and dramatic history.  It was built at the beginning of Christianity in Ireland, and has been brought to rubble and then reconstructed several times.

Today, the abbey stands roofless but well-intact.  And, at its center, the most incredible sight of all – an old yew tree that stands in the courtyard.  Local legend says that if you cut the tree it bleeds and you die within a year.  No wonder it’s survived decades without vandalism!

Visitors can tour the abbey for free year-round.  It’s located just a short walk down a limited-access road, beginning at the Muckross House car park.  Make sure to stop by for a visit!  It was one of my favorite things to see in Killarney.

Muckross House

Another notable landmark (and one of the most impressive things to see in Killarney) is the Muckross House.  Found between Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, the mansion sits on 11,000 acres and has an astounding 65 rooms (imagine trying to keep that clean!)

In 1932, the then owners Mr. and Mrs. Bournes and their son-in-law, Arthur Vincent, decided to gift the estate to the Irish nation.  In doing so, they helped establish Ireland’s first national park, Killarney National Park.

Today, visitors can stroll the grounds, enjoy the gardens, eat at the restaurant, or learn about the property’s history on one of its informative tours.  Details about everything the estate has to offer, along with ticket prices, can be found here.

Muckross Lake Loop

The best way to enjoy the Muckross area is with a stroll along the Muckross Lake Loop.  The trail spans a little over nine miles and takes three to four hours to complete.  While wandering along the trail, you’ll pass Muckross House, the Muckross Peninsula, Torc Waterfall, and even have the chance to see the country’s only herd of red deer in the Reenadinna Wood.

Also, along the way you’ll pass by the Dinis Cottage near a quaint stone bridge.  What’s really adorable is the graffiti etched into the windows, dating back to the 1820s.  Back then, it was a tradition for recently engaged couples to carve their names into the windows with their new diamond for good luck.  Today, vandalism is frowned upon.  But, you can take a break with a cup of tea or other light refreshments instead!  And, if you need a little pick-me-up, then don’t miss their homemade scones.  They’re to die for!

Torc Waterfall

With the waterfall being located a mere five-minute walk from the N71 Killarney Kenmare road, it’s super easy to get to!

The Lake Hotel

Situated on the picturesque shores of Lough Lein (Killarney’s lower lake), The Lake Hotel is an absolute jewel.  A family-run business, this four-star property has been run by the Huggard family since the 1820’s!

One of the most notable features of the property is located along the lake’s shoreline, just steps from the main hotel – the ancient castle ruins.  It’s a must-see when you visit the hotel grounds.

And, for a bite with a view, check out the hotel’s Piano Lounge, Lough Lein Room, Lakeside Bistro, Resident’s Lounge or Devils Punchbowl Bar for some delectable cuisine!

Gap of Dunloe

The Gap of Dunloe is a gorgeous mountain pass between the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range to the west and the Purple Mountain Group range to the east.  Carved by glaciers about 25,000 years ago, the dramatic scenery has made the gap a favorite destination for both tourists and locals alike.

One of the most notable features of the Gap of Dunloe is its five lakes connected by the River Loe: Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough.  And, one of the best ways to see them is on a boat tour!

And, there you have it!  Six of the most amazing things to see in Killarney that are sure to wow you on your next visit to the Emerald Isle.
