Traveling is more than just visiting new places, it’s about creating lasting memories you’ll cherish for years to come. And one of the best ways to keep those memories alive is by collecting unique and personalized souvenirs. Mementos that reflect your individual experiences and personal style instead of just another generic piece of junk from a tourist trap.
Finding that perfect, special something is one of my favorite parts of travel. And, over the years, I’ve gotten quite good at determining exactly what’s worth lugging home and what isn’t. So, let’s explore a few ideas for your next trip!
What Makes A Great Souvenir?
Before we dive into souvenir ideas, let’s first talk about what makes a great souvenir. In addition to being unique and memorable, there are a few other key considerations to keep in mind as you shop:
Lightweight & Portable
Make sure the souvenirs you purchase are easy to pack and won’t add a lot of weight to your luggage.
Durable
If you can, avoid purchasing souvenirs that are easily breakable. There are ways to protect them when you pack, but it’s much easier to just avoid them altogether.
Collectible
In recent years, I’ve started purchasing specific souvenirs in my travels to form collections. Things like artwork, stickers, holiday ornaments, etc can be a great place to start (and prompt fun conversations with friends!)
Patches
For a truly personalized memento, custom patches are an excellent way to capture your travels when you return home. Whether it’s a patch representing a national park, an iconic city skyline, or a cultural symbol, these small yet meaningful souvenirs allow you to carry a piece of your adventure with you. You can sew them onto jackets, backpacks, or even a scrapbook to visually document your journeys.

Artwork
Whether it’s a map, painting, sketch, or carving, art is a fantastic way to surround yourself with adventure at home. Plus, it’s easy to get home since most can be rolled into a tube to be easily tucked into your suitcase. Then, when you get home, you can frame it in something as unique as the piece itself. I only wish I’d started collecting art sooner in my own travels.
Jewelry
One of my favorite souvenirs is jewelry. Earrings, rings, bracelets, and necklaces are small and lightweight, making them extremely easy to pack. And, oftentimes, the jewelry you find is indicative of the country or region you’re in. So, when people inevitably compliment your stunning pieces, it prompts you to share travel stories so you get to relive the adventure all over again.

Holiday Ornaments
Another idea for a small, lightweight, and fun souvenir is holiday ornaments. Personally, I get one in every place I visit and now have an entire tree jam-packed with little mementos from every corner of the globe. So, every year, I pull them out when I decorate and get to relive the journeys again and again.
Stickers
Stickers are an easily packable item you can bring home to adorn everything from notebooks to car bumpers. I have a row of cabinets in my garage that are completely covered in stickers from around the globe. It’s an eclectic way to marvel at the places you’ve been.
Postcards
A fun twist on an age-old classic is mailing postcards to yourself while you’re away and then saving them in a scrapbook. This was an idea a friend told me about years ago and I absolutely love it!
Find a beautiful postcard and write down memorable details of the trip while you’re still on it. Things that may otherwise be forgotten by the time you get home. Then, find a stamp (another fun memento of the places you’ve traveled to) and pop it in the mail! When you get home, you’ll have a little reminder of the trip you’ve just returned from (and let’s be honest, it’s nice to get something in the mail that isn’t a bill or junk!)

And there you have it! Ideas for unique and easily-packable souvenirs you can bring home from your next adventure.
