One of the most photographed houses in the world is Plönlein.  Located in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, it’s mustard and brown facade is quintessentially German.

Look familiar? Walt Disney made the Neuschwanstein Castle famous when he modeled his iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle after it.  Like to know more?  You can read about its history and connection to Disney here.

Don’t feel like walking the mile up to the Neuschwanstein Castle?  Then take a horse drawn carriage or, better yet, a shuttle!  Although I’d recomment just walking there.  It isn’t too strenuous, and the scenery is fantastic!

Weißgerbergasse couldn’t be more German if it tried. The classic half timber architecture of the buildings along this street are a must see if you’re in Nuremberg.

St. Coloman is a beautiful pitstop just down the road from Füssen.

Schneeballen are especially popular in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. These shortcrust pastries come in a variety of flavors, and are great to munch on as you walk around.

Hidden gems are everywhere as you explore the small villages along the Romantic Road.

Fun fact- the Italian food in Germany is even better than in Italy!  And the best place for fresh Italian is Profumo di Pasta (which was conveniently located just around the corner from my hotel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.) By far the best pasta I’ve ever had in my life!  And the owner couldn’t have been friendlier and more accommodating.  It’s a must if you find yourself in Bavaria.

The Henkerhaus is a museum on a small island in Nuremberg.  It’s only accessible by footbridge, and houses exhibits highlighting the local history of executions.

One of the walled entrances into Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I was armed with a false sense of confidence after my drive on the Autobahn when I arrived here. Fast forward to 5 minutes later.  Suddenly, I was dodging a wall of pedestrians, restaurant patio seating, and shop displays on the way to my hotel.  Driving on what I could only hope was a road meant for cars.  Not to mention, Siri was apparently drunk and of no help.  Finally, I just threw up my hands and decided to zig zag my way there (apologizing the entire way.)  So yea.  If you get the chance to visit (and you should!), be prepared for a little white knuckle driving.

I’m a pescetarian, so meat surprise isn’t really up my alley.  But if you’re not a vegetarian, then Germany has a wide selection of meats to choose from!

Easter decorations are a big deal in Europe, and Germany is no exception. These hand painted Easter eggs were all over the village. What’s even more impressive- they’re all real!  And this is just a very small section of one of the many displays!

The Schöner Brunnen fountain, and the Frauenkirche Nürnberg in the main market of Nuremberg. The fountain dates back to the 14th century, and is absolutely stunning in person!  Yet another reason to add Nuremberg to your list!

You can walk the wall surrounding Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which encompasses the medieval village.  The mayor asked for donations from tourists and residents to restore the wall after damage it suffered in WWII.  For this reason, you can find plaques all along the inside with names of those responsible for its restoration.

No one does Christmas like the Germans!  Visit during the holidays for the festive Christmas markets.  Not only is it a great way to jump start your holiday spirit, it’s also a great place to pick up some new ornaments!
