“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out until sundown. For going out, I found, was really going in.” John Muir, Muir Woods
It’s a scientific fact that even a short 15 minute walk in nature has profound mental and physical benefits. It helps keep you fit, resets your brain, boosts creativity, and lowers your propensity for depression. That’s science. You can’t argue with science. And there’s no better place to reconnect with nature than Muir Woods.
Named after one of the world’s most renowned naturalists, Muir Woods is an idyllic location for a walk among giants. Located just 45 minutes outside San Francisco, Muir Woods is an oasis from the hectic day to day. With 6 miles of trails, there’s something for everyone.
In the mood for a quickie? Then walk the half hour loop. Looking for something a little more lengthy? Then try the 1 hour or 1.5 hour loops. Feel like putting your adventure pants on? Then explore one of the longer trails that extend to the outlying Mount Tamalpais State Park. These more strenuous trails offer both wooded and coastal views that are well worth the extra effort.

TOWERING TREES
The most notable features of Muir Woods are it’s massive old-growth redwood trees. Redwoods are the tallest trees on earth (the tallest in Muir Woods, Tree 76, coming in around 250 feet high and an estimated age of 779 years old.) If you think that’s ancient, consider the oldest coastal redwood is 2,520 years old! That makes this old gal a spring chicken in comparison. And all of that comes from a seed no bigger than that of a tomato (proving size really doesn’t matter.)
If you feel walking among these giants is like stepping into another world, Hollywood would agree with you. Muir Woods served as the backdrop for both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. But don’t worry, you won’t find any post apocolyptic primates here.

GORGEOUS GROVES
One of the most photographed and awe inspiring areas of Muir Woods is Cathedral Grove. Located on the Bohemian Grove Trail just past Bridge 3, this grove is an Instagram dream come true. The trail splits on either side of the giant redwoods like a river breaking around a boulder (and it leaves you feeling your problems are equally inconsequential.) Talk about gaining some perspective!
Other stunning groves along the Bohemian Grove Trail include Founders Grove and (you guessed it) Bohemian Grove. With jaw dropping views around every corner, it’s no wonder why this is a favorite among those who visit the park. Don’t feel like trying to get your nature on with tons of people around? Then visit early in the morning for a more zen-like experience.

PLAN YOUR EXCURSION
With miles and miles of trails, it’s hard to know where to start (and easy to get lost if your head is on a swivel.) The park service does an excellent job with detailing available trails, any active alerts in the area, and other information to make your date with Mother Nature more enjoyable. You can find more information about Muir Woods, including maps and more, here.

A walk through Muir Woods is the perfect way to unwind and reset. Science has proven a nature walk is good for your mental and physical health, and common sense proves Muir Woods is one of the most incredible hikes around. Do yourself a favor, and go see what John Muir was talking about!
