When it comes to fairytale villages, it doesn’t get much more picturesque than Rothenburg ob der Tauber in Germany. Founded in 1274, this medieval town was once Germany’s second-largest city and is now one of the most historic stops along the country’s Romantic Road. It has quaint cobblestone streets, classic half-timbered architecture, and colorful facades that look like they’ve been plucked straight out of a Disney classic. In fact, it was used as the backdrop for Pinnochio and many artists have drawn inspiration from the town when illustrating a “typical” European village.
But, I digress.
I was fortunate to spend a few days here when road-tripping through Germany and it was by far my favorite place in the country. Here are just a few reasons why I loved this charming German oasis.
Plönlein
One of the most photographed houses in the world, many think Plönlein refers to the yellow dwelling at the intersection of two streets in Rothenburg. However, it actually translates to “a small square at a fountain”. Whatever the name, Plönlein draws tens of thousands of tourists hoping for a glimpse at the home’s fairy tale setting.

Romantik Hotel Markustrum
Another landmark within the city is the Romantik Hotel Markustrum (where I happened to stay during my time in Rothenburg). The hotel is right next to one of the town’s many clock towers (which incidentally has the most delicious bakery, Brot & Zeit, on the other side of the archway). Speaking of mouth-watering cuisine, just a few doors down from the bakery is Profumo di Pasta da Giuseppe, which has some of the best Italian food I’ve ever tasted! But, make sure to get there right when they open since the restaurant only has a few tables and they fill up fast!

Around Town
As you stroll the colorful streets of Rothenburg you’ll pass countless shops brimming with snacks and special keepsakes. Dolls, cuckoo clocks, beer steins, sweets, and shops full of meat surprises (which wasn’t up my alley, since I’m a pescatarian, but if I wasn’t it sure would be delicious!) There’s even a shop dedicated to Christmas called Käthe Wohlfahrt (where I happened to buy gobs of holiday decor that’s to die for!)

Other Fun Activities
There are countless activities to keep you entertained as you explore the city. Tours led by an actor dressed as a Night Watchman, riding an antique carousel, ascending the wall that surrounds the city for a bird’s eye view of the world below, and strolls through the surrounding countryside were my personal favorites. But, you really can’t go wrong with whatever you decide to do! Even wandering the streets is an enchanting experience!

Easter Decor
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that I happened to visit right before Easter. And, Rothenburg did it up right! In every town square, they had elaborate garland-like decor made out of real painted eggs! I can’t even imagine how much time it must have taken to put it all together, and it was certainly a wow-worthy sight as I strolled the streets.

And, there you have it! A snapshot of my time photographing Rothenburg ob der Tauber – one of the most charming cities in the world.
Have you been before? I’d love to hear what you thought!
