Nothing says vacation like a day at the beach! The sun, the surf, the facepalm when you realize you forgot to pack a swimsuit…

Like any trip, a tropical getaway can quickly turn into a nightmare if you neglect to bring a few must-haves. That’s why I’ve put together a complete beach packing guide to help ensure you don’t leave home without the essentials.

Swimwear

PACK: Two swimsuits, a cover-up, clean/dirty packing cube

The #1 thing you need to bring on any beach vacation is a swimsuit. Because, duh. I recommend bringing two so that if one is wet you have a backup (because wearing a cold, damp suit is pretty miserable). And, of course, a cute cover-up is pretty great to have as well.

In addition to your swimwear, I suggest using an Eagle Creek’s Clean/Dirty packing cube. This two-compartment packing cube allows you to separate a wet swimsuit from your other dry clothing (so the rest of your belongings don’t get wet and stinky). It’s a must!

Sandals

PACK: One pair of sandals, possibly one pair of water shoes

There’s nothing worse than getting sand in your shoes. So, packing a pair of sandals is essential to an enjoyable day at the beach. And, if you plan on partaking in any water sports, then a pair of water shoes will come in handy too.

Tops & Bottoms

PACK: A few pairs of shorts, light shirts, tank tops

After you have your swimwear squared away, it’s time to move on to your island attire. For bottoms, I recommend at least one pair of jeans (since temperatures dip at night), and a few pairs of shorts in varying colors. This will allow you to mix and match to create different outfits, without overpacking.

For tops, I suggest a few light-weight shirts and a few tank tops to keep you easy-breezy. Again, try to bring a few different patterns and colors that can be mixed and matched for varying looks. And, to keep you warm in the evening, make sure to pack a cardigan or two!

Essential Accessories

PACK: Sunglasses, a hat, a good book

Once your outfits are ready, it’s time to move on to some sunny accessories. A hat or visor is great at not only shielding you from harmful rays, but also making you look like a movie star (hey, Hollywood!) Couple that with a slick pair of shades, and you’ll be strutting around like a beach goddess!

And then, one of my favorite beach accessories – a good book or some trashy magazines. Because there’s nothing more relaxing than laying under a palm tree and catching up on some reading (or celebrity gossip)!

Beach Must-Haves

PACK: A towel or beach blanket, portable speaker, umbrella, beach bag, sunscreen

In addition to your beautiful beachwear, there are a few other things that will make your trip picture perfect. First, an easily packable beach towel or blanket. Sure your hotel may supply them, but they’re typically somewhat small. Having one that’s oversized will keep you from getting sand in less-than-desirable places (and also look a lot cuter!)

Or, get off the ground altogether with a cute and comfortable beach chair! Sunday Supply Co. has some really great options that are not only sturdy but also come in striking summer prints.

Then you need some tunes. Of course, it’s nice to listen to the waves lapping against the shore, but it’s also great to enjoy some of your favorite music (especially if you’re competing against a nearby group with Little Wayne on repeat). I suggest a portable (and waterproof) speaker that’s durable with decent battery life.

And then there are the practical things that make any day at the beach a success. Those include sunscreen so you don’t leave looking like a cooked lobster, a beach umbrella to offer respite from the harsh sun, and a beach bag to carry it all in.

Capture The Moment

PACK: A waterproof camera, floating accessories, underwater filters

Finally, for photogs like myself, a waterproof camera is a must! And if you’re diving, make sure to use a red filter so the colors in your photos aren’t lost. Then, to ensure your equipment doesn’t sink, a floaty strap or stick is essential.

Prefer using just your phone? No problem! So long as you bring a waterproof phone case, you can tote it around without worrying about moisture.

Expert Tip – For any electronics or personal belongings you don’t want to get wet, having a dry bag along can save the day.
