When traveling to a conservative country, dressing appropriately is extremely important. It shows respect for the culture and can also save you from attracting unwanted attention.

Now, when I say dress conservatively I don’t mean wear turtlenecks, pencil skirts, and pull your hair up into a tight bun. Conservative simply means covering areas of your body that may be seen as a bit risque for those living in conservative countries. That includes knees, midriff, cleavage, shoulders, and, occasionally, your hair.

The key is to maintain modesty while keeping cool, since many conservative countries are found in warmer climates. And, trying to still look fashionable in the process. So, to inspire some appropriate outfits, I’ve put together this complete conservative country packing guide to help!

Tops

PACK: Shirts that cover your shoulders

The most important thing to know when packing tops for a conservative country is to ensure you cover your shoulders. You can easily achieve this by packing some lightweight short-sleeved shirts.

Or, if you want to wear a tank top or camisole, you can cover your shoulders with a shrug, pashmina, or by layering a button-down shirt (which doubles as a light jacket in the evenings when temperatures cool down).

EXPERT TIP: Packing a few light, versatile scarves is essential. They can be used to cover your shoulders or head when appropriate (such as entering a place of worship).

Bottoms

PACK: Lightweight pants or skirts that cover your knees

Equally important to covering your shoulders is covering your knees. Thankfully, there’s a wide range of bottoms that keep you cool while maintaining modesty.

Capri and lightweight pants are a great option when paired with one of the tops above. Or, you can wear a midi or maxi skirt if you feel like adding a fashionable flair to your ensemble.

EXPERT TIP: Opt for clothing with linen or cotton fabrics. They’re more breathable and will also wick away moisture to keep you cool.

Dresses & Rompers

PACK: A few dresses that cover your knees and shoulders

Appropriate dresses and rompers are excellent options when packing for a conservative country. They can be glammed up or dressed down with a number of accessories, and their lightweight fabrics will keep you from overheating.

Just remember to pack ones that cover your shoulders, cleavage, and knees (are you sensing a theme here?) Remember, you’re not on Spring Break in Miami.

EXPERT TIP: If you do have one you want to bring that shows a little more boob than is suitable, simply wear a camisole underneath and voilà – decency.

PACK: Versatile scarves, sandals, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen

As I mentioned earlier, the most important thing you can pack for a trip to a conservative country is a versatile scarf. Something lightweight that can be used to cover your shoulders or head, should the need arise. They’re also fantastic for accessorizing an outfit or staying warm on chilly nights.

Another must for conservative countries are sunglasses and a sunhat to protect yourself from harmful rays. That’s because many conservative countries are found in arid climates with harsh sunlight and high temperatures. And, equally important is sunscreen with a high SPF to avoid a nasty burn.

Finally, wearing sandals is a great way to keep cool on hot days. Or, wear a pair of closed-toe shoes when walking through the medina to protect your feet from broken glass and tripping on the uneven pavement.
