Going on a safari is the adventure of a lifetime! And, to make it a memorable experience for all the right reasons, you need to come prepared.

Sure, that includes packing some cute outfits that will make you look like Jane of the Jungle (photo op!) But, that also means bringing along a few practical accessories that will keep you looking as great as you feel.

To help, I’ve compiled some must-have items in this comprehensive safari packing guide.

Outerwear

PACK: One warm jacket, possibly one vest

When you picture a safari, you no doubt envision blistering temperatures on the African plains. But, it gets pretty chilly in the morning and as the sun dips down.

That’s why bringing along a jacket or vest is essential! Some of the best animal sightings happen close to dawn and dusk, so you’ll want to come prepared. That way, you can focus on catching a glimpse of the impressive wildlife instead of huddling to stay warm.

Pants & Tops

PACK: Jeans, Shorts, Layerable Tops

When it comes to outfits, you should aim for a combination of comfortable and cute.

Bring a few pairs of jeans in various colors to mix and match. This will not only keep you toasty and protected but also allow you to coordinate different ensembles.

Unlike the chilly mornings and evenings I mentioned before, the days can get quite warm. So, you should also pack one or two pairs of shorts.

For tops, I suggest bringing things that can be layered so you’re never too hot or too cold. This includes tank tops, short sleeve shirts, long sleeve tees, and a light sweater or two. And if you really want to get fancy, throw in a sensible dress just in case you find yourself at a nice dinner.

Boots

PACK: One pair of ankle-high leather boots

For your own safety, you should never leave the vehicle when you’re on a safari. But, if you do get out (or are simply walking to and from the vehicle) you’ll want to wear leather boots.

This will help you avoid scratches, and be a lifesaver if you encounter a snake or an unwelcome pest.

Accessories

PACK: One scarf or headband, a brimmed hat, a rain poncho, sunglasses

While it may seem a bit vain to accessorize on a safari, it’s actually extremely practical.

For instance, most game drives are in open-air vehicles. So, bringing a scarf or headband along can keep your hair from flying wildly in your face (and becoming a massive knot by the end of the day). Similarly, having a brimmed hat will protect you from the sun or the occasional rain shower (and let’s be honest, it really completes an outfit).

Something I wish I had on my safari drives was a rain poncho. Believe me, I was not blessing the rains down in Africa (Any Toto fans out there?! No? Moving on…) While it may not have been fashion forward, it would’ve provided welcome relief from the constant drizzle.

And of course, pack some sunglasses. Because, obviously.

Other Essentials

PACK: A versatile bag, camera, binoculars, bug wipes, sunscreen

Once you have your clothing nailed down, there are a few more things to consider packing.

First, have a practical bag you can bring with you in the vehicle. It should be large enough to hold the essentials without being so huge you could fit an entire studio apartment inside.

Next, let’s talk about camera gear. You need a good zoom lens to adequately capture the wildlife you’ll encounter. I personally shot on a Canon 5D Mark IV with a 70-200mm lens, and it did the trick. Anything short of a 200mm may fall a bit short, though.

And, if you prefer to simply see the animals rather than photograph them, then having a pair of binoculars is a good idea.

Finally, to protect your skin, I highly suggest bringing insect repellent and sunscreen. I love Off! Deep Woods towelettes because they’re easy to pack (and don’t leave you inhaling a cloud of bug spray). And, then there’s UV protection. After having skin cancer once before, I never go outside without applying Neutrogena sunscreen. Because who wants to get age spots and wrinkles? No thanks.
